▪️ To improve survival in emergency situation of a heart attack (unlicensed use). Disprin must not be given to children and adolescents under 16 years of age, unless prescribed by a doctor. How does Disprin work? Disprin tablets and Disprin direct tablets contain the active ingredient aspirin. Aspirin works by blocking the action of an enzyme in the body called cyclo-oxygenase (COX). COX is involved in the production of prostaglandins, which cause pain, swelling and inflammation, and thromboxane, which causes platelets to clump together and make blood clots. By blocking the action of COX, aspirin prevents the production of these chemicals. Disprin tablets contain 300mg of aspirin, which reduces the production of prostaglandins and so relieves pain and inflammation. Aspirin also brings down a fever by reducing the production of prostaglandins in the brain. A 300mg dose of aspirin has also been shown to increase the chances of surviving a heart attack. The aspirin stops the blood clot that is blocking the blood supply to the heart from growing any bigger. Aspirin in lower doses (75-100mg) doesn't relieve pain and inflammation. It's used as an anti-platelet or 'blood-thinning' agent to prevent blood clots that can cause heart attacks and strokes. You can read more about this here. How do I take Disprin? To relieve pain, inflammation and fever: Adults and adolescents over 16 years of age should take one to three tablets every four to six hours as needed. Do not take more than 13 tablets in any 24 hour period. In an emergency situation of a suspected heart attack: Call for an ambulance. If the casualty is not allergic to aspirin, get them to take one Disprin tablet as a single dose. Keep the packet to show the paramedics. Disprin tablets should be dissolved in a small amount of water before taking. Disprin direct tablets dissolve on the tongue and can then be swallowed without the need for a drink. You can also chew these tablets. The tablets should preferably be taken with or after food to avoid irritating the stomach. If you need to take Disprin for longer than three days you should ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice. What should I know before taking Disprin? ▪️ Aspirin is generally well-tolerated and most people do not experience any side effects. Who should not take Disprin? Children and adolescents under 16 years of age, unless prescribed by a doctor. This is because aspirin use in children has been associated with a rare condition called Reye's syndrome. This condition affects the brain and liver and though extremely rare, can be fatal. The causes of Reye's syndrome are not fully understood, but use of aspirin to treat fever in children with a virus has been implicated. There are many paracetamol and ibuprofen products not associated with Reye's syndrome available to treat pain and fever in this age group. For more advice talk to your pharmacist.
